4815 children victims of sexual abuse within Catholic Church in Portugal

The Integrity Talks

4815 children or more are believed to have been victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in Portugal. That is the conclusion of the commission of inquiry that has investigated abuse in the country since 1950. The team started more than a year ago with the investigation. At least 512 victims of alleged abuse reported to the committee at that time.

A large-scale report in France into abuse within the Roman Catholic Church led to the investigation in Portugal as well. Between 1950 and 2020, an estimated 330,000 children have been sexually abused by priests and other clergy in France. The research in Portugal was funded by the Catholic Church itself. Reuters questioned whether that would threaten the investigation. Now, the church will study the report before responding to the investigation publicly. Well yes. So far for proper mea culpa, prevention, and humanity.
