There is a new law banning marriage under 18 in the United Kingdom and in Wales. The law is seen as a major victory in terms of children’s rights, and rightly so. Parental and communal coercion destroys lives, and generations to come. The lobbying for this law took over a decade. My goodness. An excellent step towards solving honor-related crimes, and harmful traditional practices across the globe.
The legal age of marriage is now 18, meaning that 16 and 17-year-olds (for example) can no longer get married or have a civil partnership, even if the parents give consent. Reality shows that parental coercion has even ten-years-old girls being married off. If family members or others will push children into marriage, they will face a seven-year jail sentence.
